in the Dark
Kanye West first spoke the word in September 2024, fresh off the Vultures wreckage. A concert stage in Haikou, China. Two songs previewed β "Preacher Man" and "Beauty and the Beast" β then silence, then delays, then more silence.
In March 2025, he surprise-released work-in-progress versions on X alongside a black-and-white short film starring his son Saint, edited by Hype Williams. A child with a mallet, fighting wrestlers. The album was not ready. It would not be ready for another year.
the machine question
No AI
On March 25, Ye posted a tracklist and three words: "BULLY ON THE WAY NO AI." This after a year in which half his vocals were, by his own admission, artificial intelligence deepfakes. The physical copies β vinyl and CD β had already shipped with AI vocals intact. Buyers noticed. The internet remembered.
"This dude sold AI vinyls to people. If digital is AI too, it's safe to say Kanye West is no longer interested in making music."

The Album Lands
An Inglewood listening party. A YouTube livestream. Then streaming β Spotify, Apple Music, the usual altars. Eighteen tracks. Forty-two minutes. Experimental hip-hop, industrial rap, neo-soul. His first solo studio record in four years, since the unfinished Donda 2.
The version that arrived was not the version that leaked. Significant revisions. Most AI vocals stripped. A different tracklist. Ye had been patching his own album in real time, like a man repainting a portrait while the gallery fills.
The Vault β On the Sound
Critics reached for the same two references: 808s & Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Soul-flecked. Sparse. Auto-Tune crooning over sped-up samples β Sam Cooke, The Supremes, Cortex, Poncho Sanchez. West mostly sings instead of rapping. The production earned near-universal praise. Everything else was debatable.
Billboard called the songs "spare, soul-flecked compositions." Others heard a collection of sketches β atmospheric, moody, but missing the punch. One reviewer compared the experience to being forced to rap by kidnappers, finding happiness only when they stepped away.

The Vault β On "Preacher Man"
Nearly every review named it the best track. A crisp sample of The Moments' "To You With Love," layered with religious symbolism over braggadocios bars that soften, unexpectedly, into something devotional:
"This the light that's gon' illuminate the way we movin' / Trust in me, we goin' God mode, the theory's proven."
Minimal production. Quiet command. The kind of track that does not beg for attention β it earns it by standing still.
On the departure of James Blake.
Within hours of the streaming release, producer James Blake asked to have his credit removed from "This One Here." The final version, he said, bore no resemblance to what they had worked on years ago. He did not wish to take credit for someone else's creation.
Fans found this almost charming. The usual dispute runs the other direction β producers demanding credit, not relinquishing it. In the Kanye orbit, even departures arrive inverted.
the borrowed light
Uncleared
French singer Pomme had explicitly denied permission to sample "Soleil Soleil," citing disagreements with Ye's political views. The song appears on the album regardless. Variety and MusicTech noted that many of the samples appear uncleared β a ticking legal clock beneath the music.
The title track samples Nelson Muntz's "ha ha!" from The Simpsons. A children's cartoon bully, lending his mockery to a grown man's meditation on the word.

In January 2026, a full-page apology in The Wall Street Journal for antisemitic remarks. Lawsuits alleging misconduct still pending. The music arrives under a weather system of his own making. Every review must reckon with the question: can the art be discussed apart from the damage surrounding it.

A First Step
Not a triumphant reinvention. Not the wreckage some predicted. Reviews hover at 3 out of 5 β the territory of "interesting but incomplete." The production is the best thing about it. The rapping is muted. The features are wallpaper. The AI question lingers like smoke in velvet curtains.
And yet. Nearly every critic concedes the same point: this is, at minimum, a first step toward redemption. A more disciplined record than anything since Pablo. A proof that the ear remains intact, even if the man around it continues to fracture.
"The fact that this is where we're at as a fanbase crushes me. Controversies aside, I would love to hear Kanye make another great album again. But at least for me, the fact that AI was used at all in the creation process is a permanent blight on the album."
